Rural tourism emerged in Changchun City around 2000, when farmers living in the surburbs established a number of “Happy Farmhouse” tourist spots featuring local folk customs. These tourist spots developed rapidly with the guidance and assistance from the government. Since 2005, efforts have been made to select demonstrative “Happy Farmhouses”. The number of “Happy Farmhouse” tourist spots has increased to 300 and 30 of them are certified to be municipal-level tourism spots.

Various barbecued foods, such as roasted chicken, pigeon, quail, fresh fish, steamed corn-flour bread and goose's eggs are on offer. Besides, there are special banquets which consist solely of pork dishes, dog meat dishes, deer meat dishes, lamb dishes, or fish dishes. If you are curious and brave enough, nutritious insect or crocodile dishes will also be served.
