Located at 100 Jilin Street of Jilin City to the south of the beautiful Songhua River, the Jilin Meteorite Museum is near to the Jiangnan Park and the Century Square. It is the only meteorite museum in China.
At 15:02’36” on March 8, 1976, a meteorite fall, which is rare in the world history, poured down in Yongji County in the northern suburb of Jilin City. It was more in the number of specimens (138 specimens), heavier in weight (more than 2,700 kg in total) and larger in area (500 square km) than any other meteorite fall in the world. The No.1 meteorite, 1,770 kg, is the heaviest aerolite that is known so far.
The museum has an “exhibition of the Jilin Meteorite Fall”, displaying knowledge about the space and meteorite in five aspects: general view of the universe, members of the solar system, origin of meteorite, Jilin Meteorite Fall and the meaning of meteorite research.
Besides most of the specimens from the Jilin fall, the museum also has 41 meteorite specimens from other countries and regions.
Ticket price:
100 yuan/person for tangible meteorites and 80 yuan/person for non-tangible meteorites; Students: 50 yuan/person for tangible meteorites and 30 yuan/person for non-tangible meteorites.
Transportation:
Located to the south of the Songhua River in Jilin City, the museum is more than 80 km from the airport which takes about an hour to drive. It is 5 km to the Railway and the Long-Distance Bus stations, which is about a 15-minute drive.
Self-driving:
Take highway from Changchun, pass by Jiutai and arrive in Jilin, which takes about one hour and 20 minutes to drive. Exiting the highway, drive towards downtown. Drive along the Yueshan Road, Taoyuan Road and Jilin Street to the Century Square. Then you’ll arrive.
Special tourist bus and public buses:
Take buses No.1, 3, 130, 32, 52, 56 and 59 and get off at the Century Square.
