Momoge National Nature Reserve

Located in the National AAAA-level Momoge scenic area in Zhenlai County, Baicheng City, at the intersection of Jilin, Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia, Momoge National Nature Reserve has a total area is 144,000 hectares. The reserve was founded in 1981, and was included among the first batch of wetlands in 1994 by the then State Environmental Protection Administration of China; approved as a National Nature Reserve in 1997; in 2002, it was placed directly under the control of Jilin Forestry Department; certified as a national AAAA-level scenic area in 2005.

The nature reserve features a vast expanse of paradise-like wetland for birds, reflecting the harmony between human beings and birds. The Nenjiang River, which originates from the Greater Khingan, runs through the reserve, forming numerous bogs and mudflats.

There are many different kinds of wildlife in the reserve, among which are 298 kinds of birds, belonging to 17 orders and 50 families. More than 40 kinds of birds living here are under second-class protection. There are altogether nine kinds of cranes in China and Zhenlai has seven of them which are white crane, red-crowned crane, white-headed crane, white-napped crane, Mino crane, crane, and sand dune crane. The white crane, one of the endangered species in the world, is under class-one protection in China. Of the 3500 white cranes in the world, more than 3200, about 90 percent of the total, stop by Zhenlai County during their migration. In November 2010, Zhenlai County was award as the “Chinese hometown of white cranes” by China Wildlife Conservation Association.

The reserve is located 340 kilometers from Changchun City, 360 kilometers from Qiqihar City, 78 kilometers from Baicheng City, and 33 kilometers from Zhenlai County.

Self-driving:

Start off from Changchun, drive along the first-rate Changbai Road (Changchun to Baicheng) to Baozhen Town (Follow the road signs); switch to the second-rate road to Zhenlai County; go along the second-rate Zhenga Road for around 33 kilometers to the scenic area.

Special tourist bus and public bus:

Take the Zhenlai to Momoge long-distance bus at the Zhenlai County Highway Passenger Station and get off at 33 kilometers from the second-rate Zhenga Road. Follow the road signs. The trip takes forty minutes and cost 8 yuan per person.
