Old Site of Jilin Machinery Bureau

Jilin Machinery Bureau is where modern industry in northeast China was originated. It is a significant historical relics existing in Jilin. The building of the bureau was started in 1881 and finished in 1883. It was the first modern industry building in northeast China, and also representative of the westernization movement at the end of the Qing Dynasty. The purpose of building this machinery bureau by the Qing government was to build up China’s military industry to resist the invasion of foreign countries and enhance the national defense. In fact, as soon as it was put into operation, the Jilin Machinery Bureau played a significant role in resisting Russia’s invasion and protecting the sovereignty of the country. At the same time, the Jilin Mint under the machinery bureau made the earliest machine-made money in China. There is a stone tablet indicating “Old Site of Jilin Machinery Bureau”. Part of the southern wall (more than 20 meters), three workshops and two watch towers are still there.
