As a work selected for performance at the 9th China Peking Opera Art Festival, The Qiaos at Fenghuangtai (pinyin: Feng Huang Er Qiao), a classic of the Gao School of Peking Opera, was staged by the Peking Opera unit of the Jilin Provincial Traditional Opera Theatre at Dazhong Theatre, Changchun city on September 28.
The China Peking Opera Art Festival is the largest and highest-level Peking Opera event in China. This year's edition runs from September 21 to October 15, consisting of both online and offline performances. Forty-one troupes from 27 provincial-level regions will perform during the festival.
The Qiaos at Fenghuangtai was last performed during the early 1960s. The play was adapted by the Jilin Provincial Traditional Opera Theatre in 2020 and stars Ni Maocai, director of the theatre and a famous artist of the Gao School of Peking Opera as well as a group of up-and-coming young performers. The adaption was funded by the China Peking Opera Art Foundation.
Featuring a wide variety of the typical roles of Peking Opera and humorous plots, the adapted version represented the efforts of the Jilin Provincial Traditional Opera Theatre to adapt and create outstanding works of the Gao School in recent years as a base for passing down and promoting Gao School Peking Opera.
The "Art China" account of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Kuaishou short video platform will show the play on October 1.
