Siping Martyrs’ Cemetery
- China.org.cn
Siping Martyrs’ Cemetery, situated in the northern suburbs of Siping at the Siping exit of Harbin-Dalian Highway, is a national red tourism spot. It is also one of China’s protected key memorial buildings for martyrs and one of the one hundred national patriotism educational bases. Covering an area of over 200,000 square meters, the cemetery was built in 1974 as the successor to a revolutionary cemetery built in 1951. Buried here are 725 known martyrs and around ten thousand nameless ones who scarified their lives in the four battles in Siping.
With a magnificent castle-like gate and two mighty stone lions sitting on both sides, the cemetery is both grand and solemn. At the center is a revolutionary martyr monument, with a height of 32 meters. The monument has a base of 36 square meters and a body resembling four bayonets on the top symbolizing the four battles of Siping. Behind the monument is the tomb for more than ten thousand unknown martyrs of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army who scarified their lives in the four battles of Siping in 1946. The tomb is one of the largest joint burial tombs for martyrs in China. The tomb inscription was written by Hong Xuezhi, who was the vice chairman of CPPCC National Committee and the leader of one of the Siping battles. 208 known martyrs’ graves arranged into four formations surround the tomb for unknown martyrs. There is also a building for exhibiting the heroic deeds of the martyrs through 111 objects, 58 photos, 31 diagrams and written materials of 800,000 characters on show in its two halls.
