Rime Island
- China.org.cn
The Rime Island is a natural river island in Hantun Village, Manchu Town, Wula Street in the Songhuajia River Basin. It was previously named “sleeping dragon island” or “pearl island”. Due to the beautiful and long-lasting tree rime, it has gradually become a famous place for photographers and became known as the “rime island”. Surrounded by the Songhuajiang River, it has a variety of birds and big ancient trees. The river runs all the year round with misty fog. In 2000, the Longrun Tourist Development Co. Ltd. of Jilin invested 3 million yuan and built the Manchu Folk Village on the Rime Island in Hantun Village of the Wula Street. With an area of 50 hectares, it is a big theme park with restaurant, accommodation, recreation, sightseeing and shopping services.
There is an exhibition hall on the Rime Island, displaying more than 100 old pictures about Jilin and many objects. There are also pseudo-classic architectures such as Manchu three-sided compound, the government’s quadrangle courtyard, cellar, horse shed, fishing building and Dragon King Temple. In spring, people can ride horses, play archery, enjoy an outing and appreciate birds. In summer, people can go boating, fishing, hunting and drifting. In autumn, people can pick fruits, appreciate stars, do barbecue and hold campfire party. And in winter, people can enjoy the rime, photograph, play with snow, play with falcon, or take the sledge pulled by horses or dogs. Walking into the three-sided compound, you’ll see the three “strange things” in Northeast China in the past (window paper is installed outside; young girls smoke long-stemmed smoke pipe; and babies are hung up with cloth belt) and other unique and interesting things.
The Rime Island is famous for its frequency and beauty of rime. The terrain here, surround by the river, is lower than the urban area of Jilin. Cold and warm air confront here, bringing rime almost every day in winter. The rime can last sometimes for days. There are Anser cygnoides and water birds on the river for the winter. On the island, trees are in unique shapes. The weeping willows are full of white frosts. The rime here is white and thick. That’s how it got its name. Thousands of wild ducks and Anser cygnoides inhabit the island. Together with the silver rime and red sun, they make wonderful scenes.
